The nice Arolithos Villa boasts a favourable location, ideal for short walks around the area and enjoying Cretan landscape. Arolithos is 11 km outside of Heraklion, following the old way to Rethymnon. It is situated after the Village Gazi and before the Village Tilissos. Its architecture is genuine Cretan whilst the materials are also genuine old. This Village is like stepping into the past but with the comforts of the present.
The Arolithos Villa was built in 1987 with 34 rooms. In a typical Cretan area in the middle of the mountains, surrounded by trees, rocks and sky, the beautiful Traditional Cretan style Village of Arolithos lies.
Arolithos Villa is a private property and is owned by the family of Mr. Saloustros. He was born in Anogia, the most famous village in Crete. He was very proud of his nationality so that he decided to do something special in order to promote his village and the tradition of Crete.
Its whole atmosphere is unique, small winding roads, 11 Shops of Cretan technicians and artisans, whilst working in their environment, Traditional Cretan Houses so you can get a taste of the life in Crete, Traditional Cretan Restaurants with big square outside, Cretan Kafenio, a Greek Orthodox Church in Cretan style and Museum. It is unique in Crete and in whole Greece. Its aim is to show and promote the Tradition of Crete to all over the world. Lots of people visit Arolithos every year and feel that they move to another world far away of their common life and realize how different their life is from their ancestors. The Village of Arolithos gathers and maintains Traditional and Folklore Elements of Crete.
Villa facilities
Open 24 hours a day, TV and Video Room, Bar, Gift Shop, Jewellery Shop, Pets accepted, Safe, Porter, Telephone Center, Information desk, Disinfection 2 times a year, Exchange, Night Service, Languages Spoken: Greek, English, Italian, German, and French. At the moment there is no swimming pool but the nearest Beach is only 5 minutes far way by any means of transportation.
Dining options
At the Tavern you may taste not only the Cretan wine and raki but also the Cretan nutrition and the bread, baked into our traditional oven. In the Tavern we organize Cretan Evenings with music and dances from Crete and Greece as well. In the Cafeteria you may enjoy your drink by a wonderful side of Crete while breathing the mountain fresh air.
At the old coffee shop, the keeper is eager to make frothy coffee boiled over ashes and treats one to a drink of "tsikoudia" with some walnuts or roasted chickpeas with artichokes and green broad beans.
Entertainment
The Museum of Agricultural History and Popular Cretan Arts has also been created in the Traditional Village and the visitors will have the chance to see the exhibits every day throughout the year.
In Arolithos you will find some genuine craftsmen and Cretan artisans at work, such as the ironsmith, the potter, the weavers etc. In the workshops one meets Cretan craftsmen full of artistry and zest for work. They work with clay, making vases and amphorae which are copies from the archaeological museum of Heraklion. One will hear the sound of the blacksmith's anvil that fills the old with nostalgic memories and teaches the young that once man used to create using his hands as tools and his imagination for designs.
Room facilities
Some of the Rooms are Double with Twin Beds and some other are Triples. Most of them are Air Conditioned and have Balconies with a lovely view. All the Rooms have been built following a traditional way, which may not be luxurious but they offer traditional holidays. Daily Cleaning, Linen changing every two days, Armchair, Balcony Chairs, Rooms with mountain or city view.
